12.00pm 30 November 2023

Reading Environments is areading group open to all, for reading, listening and thinking together. Hosted by Su Ballard (Art History), Bonnie Etherington, and Adam Grener (English Literatures and Creative Communication), Reading Environments brings together academics, students and interested members of the public to delve into and discuss current work in the Environmental Humanities that helps us navigate the changing environmental contexts of the planet.

On the occasion of Folded Memory a special series of Reading Environments, Shelter will run across five Thursday lunchtimes pairing art works from the exhibition with selected readings.

Emergent

The reading this week is “The Timing of Climate Justice: The Perfect and its Enemies” by Kyle Powys Whyte introduced by Bonnie Etherington and paired with works by Yllwbro and Nova Paul.

“The climate change crisis narrative is based on assumptions about time that are being made. ... It is entirely possible to think through time and history using a kinship lens, instead of a linear lens. We can measure time through changes in the degrees of kinship relationships. We can remember or tell stories of times of high degrees of kinship bonds, including kinship with the non-human world.” — Kyle Powys Whyte, “The Timing of Climate Justice: The Perfect and its Enemies” in Deep Horizons: A Multisensory Archive of Ecological Affects and Prospects. Ed. Brianne Cohen, Erin Espelie, and Bonnie Etherington. Amherst, MA: Amherst College Press, 2023.
